![]() Most choral music, such as Protestant hymns and barbershop quartets, fall into the homophonic category, as does a small instrumental combo where, for example, a bass, a piano, and a drum set provide the rhythmic background for a trumpet solo.Įasily the most common and recognizable form of homophonic texture in music is the commercially-produced music we listen to from individual singers. Homophonic music is the most natural texture in Western music and easily recognizable even by the layman. ![]() However, it will be clear that these accompaniments exist to fill in the melody rather than serve as melodies themselves. In some well-written homophonic musical pieces, the accompanying parts may still have a melodic interest, meaning that they are interesting to listen to on their own. The other parts that make up this type of music are used to fill in the chords or serve as the accompaniment. Homophonic music has one clear melodic line, which is generally easily discernible. This article will take an in-depth look at what constitutes the difference between these textures and where they are most prevalent. Polyphony features many independent melodies, which we can also refer to as counterpoint or contrapuntal. Homophony is the most common texture in Western music and, when in one single rhythm, can also be referred to as homorhythmic. In contrast, polyphony refers to a piece of music consisting of a mix of melodies, each separate and independent, yet in harmony with the rest. Homophony refers to a piece of music that features a primary melody with accompaniment. The difference between polyphony and homophony is single versus multiple melodies. There are four main musical texture types: monophony, polyphony, homophony, and heterophony. A section of the sheet music can be seen below, which shows the score from 3:20 to about 3:30.Texture in music refers to the way that different sounds created by either musical instruments or singing contribute to the overall effect of the musical piece. This moment of polyphony joins together the different big songs and gives them new meaning, which helps create a very powerful ending for the act. At about 2:55, the voices of Fiona and Donkey join Shrek, which builds up to polyphony at about 3:10, where Shrek continues with his beautiful melody, now joined by Fiona, singing parts of her melody from “I Know It’s Today”, and Donkey who reprises “Don’t Let Me Go”. For example, in Shrek the Musical, Jeanine Tesori writes a beautiful and powerful ending to act one with the song “Who I’d Be”. One of the most important and powerful uses of polyphony in musical theatre is during the finale of an act, when multiple main melodies from the show come together and overlap. Musical theatre uses polyphony for a variety of reasons. There are many short episodes throughout the piece (one example being at around 1:10), but the feeling of polyphony is created even through the usage of a countermelody overtop of the subject, which is seen in the piece at almost any given point when there are two overlapping parts (even when the alto voice has the subject and the soprano is doing a countermelody at 0:20). For the sake of simplifying things, we’ll use Bach’s Fugue in G minor again for this example. In a fugue, this is called an episode, and is used to transition to a new section and modulate keys. ![]() While not referred to as the “subject” in musical theatre pieces, it is clear that the imitative polyphony in one is comparable to imitative polyphony in a fugue.Īnother type of polyphony is non-imitative, which features distinct melodic lines overlapping. In a fugue, this idea that is passed around is called a subject. The first part of the sheet music can be seen below. Likewise, in the bottom right clip, the idea of imitative polyphony is heard very strongly in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Fugue in G minor (sheet music below). Although this piece is obviously based on a fugue, as shown by the name, it is a good example of how imitative polyphony can be used in a musical theatre piece. The subject is stated in one voice, and then gets passed along to two different voice parts. For example, in Frank Losser's Guys and Dolls, imitative polyphony has a heavy presence in the song "Fugue for Tinhorns". Imitative polyphony (a main idea that is passed through different voices) can be used to emphasize text while also filling space. In musical theatre, polyphony can be used in many different ways.

![]() To begin, he writes the letters of the alphabet on the top of the page. Since hitting his stride, Duncan has taken to carrying a black pen and legal pad with him wherever he goes. “Whereas before I tried my hand at novels and plays and songs, now this is the thing I do: I write in two directions,” he says. The work began to fulfill in him a lifelong passion for writing. I started to see I could do something a little more sophisticated than just putting together some kind of clumsy sentence.” “I started to write things that got better and better and more like normal writing, more like speech. ![]() “I suddenly started to see things more clearly in two directions,” he says. That palindrome ended up in “ The Best American Nonrequired Reading of 2012.” Two years later, friends of his who owned the store Greenward in Cambridge’s Porter Square asked him to write a palindrome in honor of its third birthday. In 2008, he wrote a palindrome about the presidential election. “Or you could read a headline and say, ‘I’ll write something about that.’ I just didn’t realize it could be done.”ĭuncan’s passion for palindromes grew gradually. “I’d see a word and maybe reverse it, but it hadn’t occurred to me that you could tell a story or write about something that actually happened,” Duncan says. He found the writing form interesting, but he didn’t think much else about it. Something similar happened to Duncan when he discovered palindromes. “When I left my first bookstore job in 1981 I thought, ‘I don’t need to do that again,’ and now I’ve done hardly anything but that.” “You work with clever, talented people, you meet wonderful customers,” he says. “It’s always great to work in bookstores,” he says. Even as memorization became less of a necessity, Duncan grew to love the atmosphere. He began his first job at a bookstore in Philadelphia in 1979, and he’s continued to work in bookstores on and off ever since.īefore inventory was computerized, Duncan’s sharp memory for titles and authors served him well. “The thing I really want to do is establish palindrome writing as a literary form, to show people you can write palindromes that are beautiful and funny and factual and have real literary merit,” he says.ĭuncan discovered a love for words while growing up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. “Īs palindromes have come to define him, Duncan hopes to move the ancient field into the mainstream and show people what’s possible. It’s always better if the person or organization for whom you’ve written a palindrome replies in a positive way. “Of course, I also hope that people will appreciate them. “I hope it gives people an idea of what can be accomplished in two directions,” he says. Mostly, though, Duncan just writes palindromes for fun. And he’s written countless palindromes to serve as gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions. He’s written reversible poems and tributes that were used as auction prizes. He’s written 800-word epics that don’t lose their meaning when flipped. His creations have been featured in galleries, selected anthologies, and are the subject of an upcoming documentary. Today Duncan, who works as a staff member at the MIT Press Bookstore in Kendall Square, has developed a reputation as a professional palindromist. For fun, and then out of habit, he began reversing words he saw in print, noticing words that took on new meaning when flipped, and writing sentences that could be read backward and forward - palindromes. The discovery, which he made in the early 1980s, set him on a course he would follow for decades. He’s worked in bookstores for more than 40 years, reads often, and has tried his hand at writing novels, children’s books, song lyrics, and plays.īut it wasn’t until he stumbled onto the book “An Almanac of Words at Play” that Duncan realized words could go backwards. ![]() Words have always played a central role in Barry Duncan’s life. While some dangerous goods are too dangerous for transport by air except under very detailed allowance by the civil aviation authority, many can only be transported on cargo-only aircraft, and others can be transported on both cargo and passenger aircraft. This way, IATA ensures that the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods by air are effective, efficient and internationally accepted to facilitate their transport while putting the safety of all those on board first. IATA works closely with governments, other industry associations and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in the development of these regulations. The DGR is published annually to ensure that the industry has the most up-to-date information regarding the shipping of dangerous goods. IATA has been publishing the DGR for over 60 years. It provides everything needed to classify, prepare, accept and handle dangerous goods shipments in compliance with international air transport regulations. The IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) manual is the global reference for shipping dangerous goods by air and the only standard recognized by airlines. What to know about shipping dangerous goods? To learn more about this special cargo, let's break it down. To ensure that there are globally harmonized standards that ensures the safe and facilitates of these products, IATA has three Boards: the Dangerous Goods Board (DGB), Time and Temperature Working Group (TTWG), and the Live Animals and Perishables Board (LAPB), which manage the standards and guidance related to the transport of these products. ![]() Items include dangerous goods, live animals, perishable cargo, wet cargo, time and temperature sensitive products among others. The transport of these goods are addressed through specific regulations that must be followed when preparing, offering, accepting and handling this cargo. Special cargo are goods that, due to their nature, weight, dimensions and/or value, may have specific requirements including packaging, labelling, documentation and handling through the transport chain. Special cargo is where things get a little more complicated. Think of your average, everyday objects most of those would fall into the general cargo area. These types of items are retail and most consumer goods (with the exception of mobile phones, tablets and laptops), dry goods, hardware, textiles, and more. General cargo are items that do not fall into the Special Cargo categories and that do not require any extra precautions or special handling during air transport. It is these specialized sub-groups we will take a much closer look at further on. Special Cargo is then divided up into smaller specialized sub-groups. When looking at the various types of cargo transported by air, they fall into two main groups: General Cargo and Special Cargo. What types of cargo are transported by air? Let’s take a closer look at the cargo business. The growth in demand for the transport of pharmaceutical and healthcare products has also resulted in the introduction of new regulations for the proper handling of time and temperature sensitive shipments.Īlthough passengers and cargo are very often carried in the same aircraft together, for an airline these are two distinctly different businesses each with its own requirements and unique challenges. Air transport is also ideal for certain food products such as fresh fish, exotic fruits and cut flowers. Urgent materials such as radiopharmaceuticals for medical diagnosis or treatment or high-value goods such as technological products and high value commodities are typically shipped by air cargo. Two main factors define the choice of air transport for certain products: the value of the commodities and the speed with which they must be transported. ![]() July data shows us that air cargo continues to hold its own, but as is the case for almost all industries, we’ll need to carefully watch both economic and political developments over the coming monthst. Volatility resulting from supply chain constraints and evolving economic conditions has seen cargo markets essentially move sideways since April. Recently, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released July 2022 data for global air cargo markets showing that air cargo is tracking at near 2019 levels although it has taken a step back compared to the extra-ordinary performance of 2020-2021. Air cargo transports over US $6 trillion worth of goods annually, accounting for approximately 35% of world trade by value during the COVID-19 pandemic, air cargo represented one-third of airlines’ revenue. ![]() The Poly Bridge 2 for free is designed to be challenging and requires players to think strategically in order to get the vehicles across safely.
